Topic: Why everyone should create a ticker

Posted by BrianB on Sep. 29 2006,11:49Why you should create a ticker and add it to your signature
If you don't know what a ticker is, read < this post > first.
When you create and maintain your ticker it serves several useful purposes:
1. It gives you a visual indicator of your progress. I like to see my progress.
2. It gives everyone else a picture of your weight loss situation. When someone asks a question, the answer for someone who weighs 150 pounds with 20 to lose may be completely different than the answer for someone who weighs 310 pounds with 180 to lose. Your ticker helps us know your situation better.
3. It provides a historical record of your weight loss. Every time you update your ticker the change ends up in the historical log for your ticker. I haven't had a chance to write it yet, but at some point I'll give you guys the ability to look at the log and maybe even see a graph. Many/most of you probably already keep some sort of log, but this may save you from doing that double data-entry, and also opens the door for some analysis tools down the road that you may find useful. In at least one case so far I've been able to look at someone's ticker log to help them get a better picture of their weight loss pattern.
To create your ticker and add it to your signature, just < go to your control panel > and click on the link in the red notice. I tried to make it painless.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Posted by Debby on Sep. 29 2006,12:31Good points Brian. I look forward to updating mine ... well not with the gains.
But seriously, it does give me incentive knowing in two more days I get to make it drop some more.
Posted by Tabi on Sep. 29 2006,13:09Thanks Brian.
Posted by Sara on Oct. 09 2006,23:24OKay I think I made one. Thanks Brian!
Posted by BrianB on Oct. 10 2006,00:55Looks like you got it Sara!
Posted by Leslie on Oct. 17 2006,22:38I think I created my ticker and I'm excited about the program!
Posted by Michelle on Oct. 17 2006,22:42Welcome Leslie - you are going to love the program! How are you finding it so far ?
Posted by Leslie on Oct. 17 2006,22:48I'm loving it so far. Except for the doozy of a headache I had on my first and second day, I've felt great. I haven't craved anything or even been hungry. I had a big loss after three days so that helps a girl stay on track. I love these forums....you guys are very inspirational and it's great to have other's to compare and consult with!
Posted by RolandG on Oct. 17 2006,22:56Welcome to the program and forum Leslie .. you'll find a lot of great info along with awesome support on this site.
Posted by RolandG on Oct. 17 2006,23:00Leslie, I noticed you were from Edmonton .. what clinic do you go to?
Posted by Leslie on Oct. 18 2006,08:46I go to the Christy's Corner clinic. I live in St. Albert and work in Edmonton so it's on my way to work!
Posted by RolandG on Oct. 18 2006,12:47That's the same clinic I go to. I work close by so it's easy for me to slip out and get there at any time. So far I've found all the nurses but one great. And the doctor is awesome.
Posted by Julia on Oct. 28 2006,20:37Brian - I am using the progress chart that can be found in the resources thread. I would like to add my ticker to a document (I don't think I can add it to an Excel document) but I would like to add it to something so that I have it somewhat together. Do you know how I copy my ticker to paste it somewhere else? Thanks once again for all your help.
Posted by BrianB on Oct. 29 2006,00:58If you just want a static graphic to add to a document, you can just right click on your ticker image and choose "Save Picture As". Then you'll have a file on your hard drive that you can bring into your document. If whatever you want to put it in can handle HTML tags, then there is a way you can link to your ticker in the document.
The HTML tag for your ticker is:
That's only useful if the document can handle HTML tags tho.
Posted by Pam on Nov. 27 2006,12:28Brian the tickers are a great idea. You've done a great job here (these forums)! Thanks.
Posted by BrianB on Nov. 27 2006,14:12Thanks Pam! In fairness, I didn't come up with the ticker idea, I just made it a little friendlier than the other ticker generator tools out there on the web.
Posted by Ash123 on Jan. 17 2007,16:25ooh man! i luv the ticker... its graphic... I love updating it each time i lose weight... =) & I for some reason find it motivating... i look forward to coming home after a weigh in so I can update the ticker!!
I dont care if its not ur idea Brian... u have done a great job with the website, all the tips & even ur weight loss is soo motivating for me!! thanks dude... rock on!
im kinda high rite now... i just had the protein bar.. yummmy!
Posted by DDL on Jan. 17 2007,17:07I like to update my ticker right after getting home from the clinic. It's amazing to see the progress everyone make. Sure keeps me motivated.
Posted by Rhea on Jan. 17 2007,20:50brian, i love the ticker too...really motivating. When I update my ticker information I usually don't see the graphic update until the next day...is this the norm?
Posted by BrianB on Jan. 17 2007,21:08Different browsers "cache" the image for different lengths of time. In general the browser should cache it for no more than an hour after which time you should see the new image. If you're using Internet Explorer on Windows, and you are on a page that has your ticker on it, you can do Ctrl+F5 and that will "force" refresh everything on that page (including your ticker).
Posted by julia hulia on Mar. 03 2007,08:36Hi Brian,
I have a suggestion for the ticker (although it's already fantastic!)...
What do you think of adding a small space on/around the ticker for people's height? Height makes such a difference in your goal, I think a lot of people would find it helpful & interesting to see people's height compared to their weight & goal. I know there was a thread about height, but it would be so much easier to see it next to the ticker.
Posted by Michelle on Mar. 03 2007,09:50Good idea Julia ! That would be most helpful when comparing people's goals & progress to your own!
Poor Brian - good thing you are smart cause we depend on you for a lot, eh? (that's my little Canadianism for today - been caught on it a few times this week)
Posted by BrianB on Mar. 03 2007,10:35I think it is a good idea to have that as an optional field. That said, I'm not sure where to put it. It seems like the only place would be on the line at the bottom that tells how much you've lost and how much you have to go.
I've considered this:
and am not sure what I think of either. What do you guys think? If you don't like either of those, any other suggestions on placement?
Posted by BrianB on Mar. 03 2007,10:37
Little things, like text changes, are fairly easy. If it helps people get more out of it, then I vote it gets done.
Posted by julia hulia on Mar. 03 2007,13:35Thanks Brian! That was quick. I like the second one, because you're still ending with the percentage lost.
Posted by Michelle on Mar. 03 2007,14:17I like the second one too!
Posted by NikiM on Mar. 03 2007,20:03I'm glad someone else brought this up! I started a thread a while ago to see how many other women are the same height as me. I'm really curious about everyone's goal weight compared to their height.
I like the second style better too.
Posted by Hollywood on May 07 2007,19:57Aw man....I went to update my current weight so that my ticker would move and it changed to maintanence. I have no idea why I only changed my current weight. Can someone help me? I want to see my numbers. Thanks
Posted by BrianB on May 07 2007,20:06
You just chose the wrong link for your ticker. Go back to your control panel and choose the first red link, not the second. Regenerate and you'll be all set.
This reminds me that I need to ponder adding an option for the height on the tickers...
Posted by Hollywood on May 07 2007,20:23Thanks Brian
Posted by chale on July 25 2007,11:45Let me say how much I love my ticker - having a graphic representation of the "journey" is fun AND like today when I am hung up on not yet getting into the 170s I look at my ticker calculation and find I'm 40% toward my goal! (I would NEVER have done that math). Small goals and reasons to be happy! WWhooooo-hoooooo!
Posted by MelismaMcG on Dec. 02 2007,13:01I've seen several people who list how much they've lost per week and/or month - how is that done? As part of the signature in Your Control Panel? I would love to be able to show that stat when I get started - it would be really motivating!
Melisma - eager beaver getting impatient with the bank balance which isn't going up fast enough
Posted by BrianB on Dec. 02 2007,13:14
Yep, they just modify their signature block each week or month and add their new loss. Great to see your enthusiasm -- it will serve you well!
Posted by MelismaMcG on Dec. 02 2007,13:35Thanks, Brian
As to the enthusiasm... well, I'm getting really impatient to start. Once I've made up my mind to do something, I don't like sitting around and waiting to get going. Although I'm trying to tell myself that I'm not doing that now - I'm working an insane amount of overtime between now and Christmas in order to earn the initial consult fee and the first 8 weeks of the program. I've put together a budget in Excel that takes into account my regular expenses, income, and the goal for savings each pay period - and I've incorporated formulas to automatically adjust those figures and how much more I need to earn in order to save toward the goal for the pay period, every time I work another block of overtime. That's really motivating to me, to see the numbers change every day. But I still can't wait until the bank account shows what the Excel file tells me is possible!
Posted by tck on Dec. 03 2007,03:09Brian, any chance you could add a textbox sometime on the ticker page to allow us to edit our signatures right on there. It's not that big of a deal, but it would be more convenient rather than having to visit the ticker page, and then edit the signature to add the "monthly breakdown". Just a thought.
Posted by Doughboy on Feb. 06 2008,03:03Thanks for the very easy use of making a ticker, very awesome, and this is officially my first post too
Posted by Ada on Feb. 06 2008,07:48
Welcome Doughboy! You are in for a most amazing journey and I see you have an absolutely fantastic start ! We are rooting for you all the way to that finish line !
Posted by BrianB on Feb. 06 2008,09:34
This is an excellent suggestion. Sorry for the delay in responding to it -- I didn't see it until Doughboy posted his new post (bringing the topic back into the 'New Posts' list). Somehow I missed yours before.
I'm adding this to the to-do list. Since that script is modifying the signature block anyway, it should be pretty easy.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Posted by BrianB on Feb. 06 2008,09:35
Welcome! Glad you like the tickers. It's fun to watch them move to the right!
Posted by ushie on Feb. 06 2008,13:41Doughboy!
First post and showing 36+ pounds? WOW!!
Doin' good... no ... great.
Congrats to you and welcome to the site.
We all take care of each other, keep visiting and keep us updated.
Posted by Doughboy on Feb. 07 2008,23:43Wow, thanks for the welcome from everyone, I have been visitng the site for 3 days and love it so far. I plan on putting before and after pics up as well, only thing i didn;t take a before pic, but only been a month, i will improvise hehe.
High hopes for the weigh in tomorrow.
Posted by Lynn2008 on Feb. 09 2008,20:51I'm just checking if my ticker is working
Posted by BrianB on Feb. 10 2008,00:42
Not yet. Hopefully my PM will help you get it sorted out.
Posted by SaraS on July 08 2008,17:39I'm not sure if I know how to add my ticker to my signature. I think I've figured out how to update it etc...but I'm hoping that it is now on my posts.
SaraS (only my 2nd post)
Posted by Ada on July 09 2008,11:54Welcome Sara ! You've come to a great place. Best of luck on this amazing journey !!
Posted by SaraS on July 09 2008,18:51Thanks Ada. You're a doll. I have read many posts and the warmth that is felt in the messages is amazing. I truly believe that this will help...especially since the last 2 weeks haven't shown much in the way of results. ( I don't get it...I'm doing everything to the T )
Thanks again, everyone, and especially BrianB for such an amazing resource.
Posted by AngelaM on Oct. 23 2008,11:06I did create a ticker, but how do you put the extra notes underneath it?
Posted by Ada on Oct. 23 2008,12:00Hey Angela. Go to "Your Control Panel" link, click on the "personal info." tab, then on "edit your profile". Scroll down until you see the box underneath your ticker. This "your signature" box and you can type anything you want there.
Posted by AngelaM on Oct. 23 2008,13:04Thank you Ada, it was so easy once I had your explanation. Now I have to learn how to add a picture?
Posted by Ada on Oct. 23 2008,14:26< Here > is a good explanation on how to add a picture avatar.
Posted by mrsjrs on Jan. 06 2009,09:29I am re-starting the program tomorrow and I can't seem to update my ticker from last year. Anyone know why this is?
Posted by Ada on Jan. 06 2009,10:00Hmmm. Perhaps Brian will jump in here if he is around. In the meantime, what is the specific area you are having a problem with? Is it not letting you type in new data? If you are able to change the data, are you scrolling down to the end of the page and clicking on the grey button to "generate" the updated ticker?
Posted by mrsjrs on Jan. 06 2009,16:00It is letting me put in new data, however when I click on the update button nothing changes.
Posted by BrianB on Jan. 06 2009,23:40Hmmmm. Not sure what was happening for you. I went into the ticker maker "as you" and it looked like all the values were filled in and the ruler and slider chosen. I just clicked the "add to signature" checkbox and hit the button to generate and it looks like it worked. Let me know if it continues to cause trouble.
Posted by Kate on Jan. 23 2009,19:35I just restarted my ticker. I always say I care more about inches then my weight but when I come here watching my ticker go down keeps me motivated
Posted by Lorene on Oct. 04 2009,00:11I'm just checking to see if I updated my signature correctly.
Posted by Lishka on Oct. 27 2009,13:50Well, this is my first post.
I have been lurking for a while, debating whether or not to even join, but here I am with my first (almost) week behind me and doing ok! I just made my ticker, think I did it right... ?
I was STARVING the first few days, but it's so weird now. I'm just not hungry.
Thanks for letting me join your little family here and I look forward to getting to know you all!
Posted by Ada on Oct. 27 2009,17:17Welcome Lishka ! If you have time to spend time scanning prior posts you will learn an awful lot and get tons of tips. You can scroll through the forums....or use the search function at the top of the page....you will find the BBSearch button to be a better tool. Just plug in a word or two....choose how many posts you want to see...and voila ! ....lots of reading. This creation of this is Brian's genius. Also, if you are curious about seeing the posts of anyone in particular...just plug their name in, put a vowel in the text box and the tool will bring up all their posts on various subjects.
All the best on the journey ! We'll be rooting for you !
Posted by Jo Blue Eyes on Nov. 19 2009,18:49I seem to be having problems updating my ticker as well. I have put in my new weight and tried to update. A error message bounces back in regards to something "not found".
Any help is appreciated!!
Posted by BrianB on Nov. 21 2009,00:23
Please PM me with the exact error message and I'll take a look. One thing to try is to make sure you click the "remember me" box when logging in. If that doesn't fix it, send please PM the error message and I'll get it sorted out.
Posted by Ashley on Jan. 24 2010,04:18Just started on Friday and am doing okay so far... I think. Just created my ticker and haven't seen it yet. Can you only see it if you post? Is there like a page I can open and see it and up date it? Thanks, Brian.
Posted by Jan68 on Jan. 24 2010,07:15I can see your ticker!
Posted by Ashley on Jan. 25 2010,15:21Brian - how do I change my Ticker? I set it up, but cannot find how to update it. I thought I could in my profile, but no. Thanks!
Posted by Mimglow on Jan. 25 2010,15:24Go to "Your control Panel". Then, look for red font and you will see where you update the ticker for dieters.
Posted by Christina86 on Jan. 25 2010,15:24go to control panel and the it will say click here for ticker...then just change the weight to what u weigh that day and click update at the bottom

Posted by Merarth on Sep. 19 2010,11:44Hi, I'm new, just made a ticker... I think,...
Joined Dr. B 3 weeks ago. Very excited about it. Can't wait to shop for "normal" sized clothes!
Posted by Koukla on Sep. 19 2010,12:50Welcome Merarth! Yeah, I'm looking forward to "normal" sized clothes too!
Posted by dawnkyeknod on April 18 2012,22:57I am new to the board. Checking out my ticker I am hoping that I might find some support here. I have been on the program for about a month and I am still hungry. I thought this would pass....
Posted by Yazzie on April 19 2012,08:19Welcome Dawn!
I was hungry the whole time I was on strict, I hate to tell you. That's not to say that I was hungry when I had just finished a meal, but I was hungry before the next meal was due. I know that many people report no hunger because of ketosis, but I was burning very high the whole time and was really hungry too. Hang in there, you will lose the weight faster than with any other program if you do!
Posted by bernicem77 on April 19 2012,20:27Welcome Dawn. Are you splitting your food into two meals, or speading out your food troughout the day?
Posted by dawnkyeknod on April 19 2012,22:23I am eating a protein bar in the morning. Then mid morning I have a snack - usually low carb yogurt with half a fruit. For lunch I have veggie soup and something - maybe melba toast or veggies or fruit.... then I am starving in the afternoon and when I do eat supper (usually a protein , a veg and a bread and a fruit if I have any left) I dont feel satisfied. I feel hungry for the rest of the night
Posted by dawnkyeknod on April 19 2012,22:26by the way, I feel like I read about so many people eating freebies (misc) things but I thought we were only allowed 2 per day. I use them up with my coffee. Am I missing something that I could be eating???
Posted by bernicem77 on April 19 2012,22:38Looks like you are speading things apart. Can you try having just fruit for breakfast or mini bretons and laughing cow. And then try to have your proteins for lunch and dinner.
Are you tlking about the miscellaneous items? You are allowed two per group each day. Not two in total.
Posted by dawnkyeknod on April 19 2012,22:42What is laughing cow? Isnt that cheese? Isnt that a protein?
I know that we can get 2 per group of misc but all of the ones I like are in the same group lol
Posted by bernicem77 on April 19 2012,23:23It is a cheese, but one wedge is considered to be a garnish. It's listed as "The Laughing Cow". I'm the same, all the miscellaneouses that I like are garnishes.
