Why you should create a ticker and add it to your signature

If you don't know what a ticker is, read < this post > first.

When you create and maintain your ticker it serves several useful purposes:

1. It gives you a visual indicator of your progress.  I like to see my progress.

2. It gives everyone else a picture of your weight loss situation.  When someone asks a question, the answer for someone who weighs 150 pounds with 20 to lose may be completely different than the answer for someone who weighs 310 pounds with 180 to lose.  Your ticker helps us know your situation better.

3. It provides a historical record of your weight loss.  Every time you update your ticker the change ends up in the historical log for your ticker.  I haven't had a chance to write it yet, but at some point I'll give you guys the ability to look at the log and maybe even see a graph.  Many/most of you probably already keep some sort of log, but this may save you from doing that double data-entry, and also opens the door for some analysis tools down the road that you may find useful.  In at least one case so far I've been able to look at someone's ticker log to help them get a better picture of their weight loss pattern.

To create your ticker and add it to your signature, just < go to your control panel > and click on the link in the red notice.  I tried to make it painless.

I'm loving it so far. Except for the doozy of a headache I had on my first and second day, I've felt great. I haven't craved anything or even been hungry. I had a big loss after three days so that helps a girl stay on track. I love these forums....you guys are very inspirational and it's great to have other's to compare and consult with!

That's the same clinic I go to. I work close by so it's easy for me to slip out and get there at any time. So far I've found all the nurses but one great. And the doctor is awesome.

Brian - I am using the progress chart that can be found in the resources thread.  I would like to add my ticker to a document (I don't think I can add it to an Excel document) but I would like to add it to something so that I have it somewhat together.  Do you know how I copy my ticker to paste it somewhere else?  Thanks once again for all your help.

If you just want a static graphic to add to a document, you can just right click on your ticker image and choose "Save Picture As".  Then you'll have a file on your hard drive that you can bring into your document.  If whatever you want to put it in can handle HTML tags, then there is a way you can link to your ticker in the document.  

The HTML tag for your ticker is:

<img src="http://www.drbforums.com/ticker/Julia.png">

That's only useful if the document can handle HTML tags tho.

Thanks Pam!  In fairness, I didn't come up with the ticker idea, I just made it a little friendlier than the other ticker generator tools out there on the web.

ooh man! i luv the ticker... its graphic... I love updating it each time i lose weight... =) & I for some reason find it motivating... i look forward to coming home after a weigh in so I can update the ticker!!

I like to update my ticker right after getting home from the clinic. It's amazing to see the progress everyone make. Sure keeps me motivated.

brian, i love the ticker too...really motivating.  When I update my ticker information I usually don't see the graphic update until the next day...is this the norm?

Different browsers "cache" the image for different lengths of time.  In general the browser should cache it for no more than an hour after which time you should see the new image.  If you're using Internet Explorer on Windows, and you are on a page that has your ticker on it, you can do Ctrl+F5 and that will "force" refresh everything on that page (including your ticker).

Hi Brian,

I have a suggestion for the ticker (although it's already fantastic!)...

What do you think of adding a small space on/around the ticker for people's height?  Height makes such a difference in your goal, I think a lot of people would find it helpful & interesting to see people's height compared to their weight & goal.  I know there was a thread about height, but it would be so much easier to see it next to the ticker.

I think it is a good idea to have that as an optional field.  That said, I'm not sure where to put it.  It seems like the only place would be on the line at the bottom that tells how much you've lost and how much you have to go.

I've considered this:

Code Sample
167.4 lbs. lost, 0 lbs. to go (100 %), 5'10" tall


and this:

5'10" tall, 167.4 lbs. lost, 0 lbs. to go (100 %)


and am not sure what I think of either.  What do you guys think?  If you don't like either of those, any other suggestions on placement?

I'm glad someone else brought this up! I started a thread a while ago to see how many other women are the same height as me. I'm really curious about everyone's goal weight compared to their height.

I like the second style better too.

Aw man....I went to update my current weight so that my ticker would move and it changed to maintanence. I have no idea why I only changed my current weight. Can someone help me? I want to see my numbers. Thanks

You just chose the wrong link for your ticker.  Go back to your control panel and choose the first red link, not the second.  Regenerate and you'll be all set.

This reminds me that I need to ponder adding an option for the height on the tickers...

I've seen several people who list how much they've lost per week and/or month - how is that done? As part of the signature in Your Control Panel? I would love to be able to show that stat when I get started - it would be really motivating!

Yep, they just modify their signature block each week or month and add their new loss.  Great to see your enthusiasm -- it will serve you well!

As to the enthusiasm... well, I'm getting really impatient to start. Once I've made up my mind to do something, I don't like sitting around and waiting to get going. Although I'm trying to tell myself that I'm not doing that now - I'm working an insane amount of overtime between now and Christmas in order to earn the initial consult fee and the first 8 weeks of the program. I've put together a budget in Excel that takes into account my regular expenses, income, and the goal for savings each pay period - and I've incorporated formulas to automatically adjust those figures and how much more I need to earn in order to save toward the goal for the pay period, every time I work another block of overtime. That's really motivating to me, to see the numbers change every day. But I still can't wait until the bank account shows what the Excel file tells me is possible!

Brian, any chance you could add a textbox sometime on the ticker page to allow us to edit our signatures right on there.  It's not that big of a deal, but it would be more convenient rather than having to visit the ticker page, and then edit the signature to add the "monthly breakdown".  Just a thought.

This is an excellent suggestion.  Sorry for the delay in responding to it -- I didn't see it until Doughboy posted his new post (bringing the topic back into the 'New Posts' list).  Somehow I missed yours before.

I'm adding this to the to-do list.  Since that script is modifying the signature block anyway, it should be pretty easy.

Wow, thanks for the welcome from everyone, I have been visitng the site for 3 days and love it so far.  I plan on putting before and after pics up as well, only thing i didn;t take a before pic, but only been a month, i will improvise hehe.

Hey Angela.  Go to "Your Control Panel"  link, click on the "personal info." tab, then on "edit your profile".  Scroll down until you see the box underneath your ticker.  This "your signature" box and you can type anything you want there.  :)

Hmmm.  Perhaps Brian will jump in here if he is around.  In the meantime, what is the specific area you are having a problem with?  Is it not letting you type in new data?  If you are able to change the data, are you scrolling down to the end of the page and clicking on the grey button to "generate" the updated ticker?

Hmmmm.  Not sure what was happening for you.  I went into the ticker maker "as you" and it looked like all the values were filled in and the ruler and slider chosen.  I just clicked the "add to signature" checkbox and hit the button to generate and it looks like it worked.  Let me know if it continues to cause trouble.

Well, this is my first post.
I have been lurking for a while, debating whether or not to even join, but here I am with my first (almost) week behind me and doing ok! I just made my ticker, think I did it right... ?
I was STARVING the first few days, but it's so weird now. I'm just not hungry.

Welcome Lishka !   If you have time to spend time scanning prior posts you will learn an awful lot and get tons of tips.  You can scroll through the forums....or use the search function at the top of the page....you will find the BBSearch button to be a better tool.  Just plug in a word or two....choose how many posts you want to see...and voila ! ....lots of reading.  This creation of this is Brian's genius.  Also, if you are curious about seeing the posts of anyone in particular...just plug their name in, put a vowel in the text box and the tool will bring up all their posts on various subjects.

Please PM me with the exact error message and I'll take a look.  One thing to try is to make sure you click the "remember me" box when logging in.  If that doesn't fix it, send please PM the error message and I'll get it sorted out.

Go to "Your control Panel". Then, look for red font and you will see where you update the ticker for dieters.

I was hungry the whole time I was on strict, I hate to tell you.  That's not to say that I was hungry when I had just finished a meal, but I was hungry before the next meal was due.  I know that many people report no hunger because of ketosis, but I was burning very high the whole time and was really hungry too.  Hang in there, you will lose the weight faster than with any other program if you do!

I am eating a protein bar in the morning. Then mid morning I have a snack - usually low carb yogurt with half a fruit. For lunch I have veggie soup and something - maybe melba toast or veggies  or fruit.... then I am starving in the afternoon and when I do eat supper  (usually a protein , a veg and a bread and a fruit if I have any left) I dont feel satisfied. I feel hungry for the rest of the night :(

by the way, I feel like I read about so many people eating freebies (misc) things but I thought we were only allowed 2 per day. I use them up with my coffee. Am I missing something that I could be eating???

Looks like you are speading things apart. Can you try having just fruit for breakfast or mini bretons and laughing cow. And then try to have your proteins for lunch and dinner.

Are you tlking about the miscellaneous items? You are allowed two per group each day. Not two in total.

It is a cheese, but one wedge is considered to be a garnish. It's listed as "The Laughing Cow". I'm the same, all the miscellaneouses that I like are garnishes.
