Hello everyone - my name is Julia and I am excited about becoming part of the Dr. B. family.  Unfortunately, it will not happen until October 12th.  We (another teacher and I) were hoping to start this week, but the Brentwood clinic here in Calgary (HELLO DEBBY) were booked up and they are not doing consults on Tuesday (the day after Cdn. Thanksgiving).
I'm disappointed, but hey, at least I can enjoy Thanksgiving dinner.
The only thing that could get in the way of me starting is the money - I know, I know, you can't put a price tag on health - but having done Jenny Craig, WW and Meridia didn't stop me from losing the weight and regaining it again. Will this be another costly failed attempt?
I am so fortunate to be doing this with a colleague, who also happens to live on my street.  Our real inspiration is another teacher we know who has lost 54 pounds since the tail end of April.
Any encouragement you can pass along will be greatly appreciated.
Julia

Hi Julia and welcome!  Hey, if you are at the Brentwood Clinic between 7:30 and 8:00 in the mornings we may run into each other.  I'll be the big girl. ;)

As for expense, since you're a teacher check with your Blue Cross plan. I just found out that mine will cover 100% of the shots (minus administration fee).

I don't know much about Jenny Craig or WeightWatchers, but I did take Meridia once.  In the beginning it was great, I had zero appetite and ate small meals and lost a little weight.  However the effect didn't last long and within about a month I was back to my normal eating habits.  That's one reason a lot of insurance companies don't cover Meridia (or at least have it as a non-preferred drug with a higher copay) -- the long term success with it is pretty miserable.

I think the Dr. B diet is designed to give you a really good chance at long term success.  While in the dieting phase you develop new habits (shopping, food choice, portion control, meal-making, etc.) and don't rely on drugs or "program" food that you can't do forever.  After you're done with the diet phase, you do "maintenance" which is a gradual reintroduction of certain things and a controlled expansion of your portions.  This should help keep you from just saying "yay, I made it" and then going back to your old habits.

Any plan that doesn't develop sustainable habits and give you a graceful transition off the strict diet is doomed to long-term failure.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Debby, as I do not know how to use the quote button, I was wondering about something you said in your post to me. You stated that Alta. Blue Cross will cover the cost of the shots, what would that cost be?
My husband is quite concerned about the financial committment (as I am as well) to do this program, so if I could relieve some of his fears by letting him know what Blue Cross will cover, we will both sleep better at night.

Brian, thank you for the dolphin avatar.  When I set up my ticker, I bet you can guess what I am going for.  You are an amazing, wonderful person who goes the extra mile by being supportive in so many ways.  You are (as well as the other staff members) a God send, and I thank him for you and all that you do.
I'll let you know how things go on the 12th.  Until then I will continue to use this forum to gain inspiration from those who have gone before me.
Julia

Debby, as I do not know how to use the quote button[...]

When you click the quote button, a window opens that is similar to the normal window that you compose a post in.  The main difference is that at the bottom of that page there is another box that shows the text of the post whose box the quote button was in.  You can delete some of the quoted text out of there if you are replying to only a specific portion of the post (like I did on this one).

I hope that made sense.

Oh, and thanks for the kind words.  I'm glad to be a positive influence where I can.

Brian thanks for babysitting through the forum and helping me navigate around.  Let's hope I did this right.
Thanks again.
Julia :)

Julia, I too am from Calgary.  My first appt. is at the Eaton Centre location on Oct. 4.  I know it will be expensive but I look at it like this:  I will be spending $2500 to finally rid my life of 25 years of battling the buldge is that is worth every penny!

Good luck, I'll be cheering you on!

Kate

The "resurrection" of this thread is kinda funny and sad at the same time.  Funny because nobody noticed that Julia started this topic on October 1, 2006 (a year ago).  Sad because I remember Julia (since I had only been doing the diet for about 2 months and the board was pretty new when she joined up) and I wonder what happened to her.

We've had a lot of people come and go over the last year or so and I often wonder how they are doing.  I've been blessed with such phenomenal success having stuck with the diet that I can only hope that those who've drifted away did the same -- but part of me assumes that they stopped coming here because they fell away from the diet too.   :(

Oops...never noticed that!!

I agree, you hope that they have the same successes, but it's likely that they have drifted away from here because they have also drifted from the diet....well, maybe they'll come back to it one day when they're ready if that's the case.

:(  I hope she did get to her goal and is just so busy now hiking, and biking and doing all of the things she always wanted to do that she just doesn't have the time to get online.

I think part of my motivation for continuing and FIGHTING to succeed at this diet is that I can honestly say I have quit EVERY diet I have ever tried and never made my goal...and I have been going on and off diets for 13 years!!  I want this to be different, and it is going to be.  I want to be able to say I stuck it out and I made it!! I do not want to just disappear quietly and gain my weight back again.  So if I stop posting suddenly you guys have to come find me and kick my arse back on plan OK?

this one thread was a real eye opener for me...for the reason that i just assumed people would see the results of weight loss and not ever want to go back to the "before"...we all have to find our path i suppose

i've made a promise to myself that this forum is to be a daily motivator for me...i haven't even started but am so raring to go that thursday can't get here quick enough... :bounce:

i'm sure most of you will be sick and tired of hearing from me because this forum will be such an integral part of my everyday success - i'll be telling myself, "one more day of action instead of reaction"...and the best motivator - the gallery of before and after photos...i even took my "before" photos already :blush2:
