Hi everyone - I just started the strict program last week and have been impressed with my results so far.  I have also been cautious about my caffeine intake, but I really enjoy that morning cup of joe first thing in the morning.  I haven't had caffeine everyday, but this morning when I drank my cup I immediately started getting stomach gargles - and according to the diet book it states that caffeine can affect your insulin production and cause hunger.  I would like to cut caffeine out all together which I don't think will be that tough (switching to decaf) but I have been waking up with headaches due to the withdrawals.  Just curious who else out there went cold turkey on caffeine and how long did headaches last for?

I used to be a reporter and I regularly drank up to 9 cups of coffee a day for about 20 years.  (I wince to think of it now!)  Eight years ago, I changed careers and reduced my caffeine intake to 2-3 cups a day... then to 1 cup a day (surprisingly, no headaches as a result of this dramatic reduction).  A few years ago I was using a naturopathic remedy and had to eliminate coffee altogether for a few days, because the oil in coffee conflicted with the remedy.  So I stopped drinking coffee while I was on the remedy, and then then I thought, "well, if I can stop for a few days, I can stop for a few days more..." so I quit.  I had headaches for about a week.  Your withdrawal symptoms may vary, depending on how much caffeine you're used to getting.

Shane,

Long before I started with Dr. B I decided that my addiction to Coca-Cola was crazy, I would drink a lot eat day.  I decided to go off of it cold turkey and I had all the symptoms smokers describe when quitting.  The headaches lasted for probably a month and my mood swings were crazy!  It also took me about a year before I could not crave a coke when I was stressed or whatever...but I think everyone reacts differently!

Good Luck, I have found that on the Dr. B diet if I don't do any caffeine at all my losses are much better!

having started this diet with severe pitted edema the doctor told me to have one cup of coffee (caffeinated) to help expel extra fluids...anymore than one cup and it works in the opposite direction with water retention...so far it's worked - every morning i have one cup of caff coffee, then if i want more, i switch to decaf but always making sure i have more water than coffee

hope this helps

Hi Shane

I have to admit it I love coffee.  I buy really good caf and decaf beans, which I grind together.  I have one scoop of (half caf and half decaf) in the morning and then another later in the day if I want.  I find the mixture is easier on my stomach.

Good luck.

Hey Shane - has anyone ever told you you look just like Gary Coleman?   :wink2:

(Smart aleck)

If you've stuck to no caffeine since your post, you probably already know this, but about a week of mother-of-all-headaches and your caffeine withdrawals should subside.

How have you fared?

Gary is my twin brother ;-)

Before I started the diet I only had about one coffee a day, so it wan't a big problem.  I have started ordering decafs at Starbucks and I haven't really missed the caff.  No headaches.  The decaf at Starbucks is really good, I didn't drink for the caf anyways...I just enjoy the routine of going into the coffee shop and getting a good cup of Joe to start the day.

Cheers
