Hi again,

Looks like I am going to have to do some travel up to some remote places in BC & Alberta for business the first week in Feb.  I am hoping that some of you have had this challenge and have some ideas and or thoughts on how to handle this.  I was thinking of stocking up on Dr. B bars and other stuff to bring with me.  Any other help or insight on how to handle this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Corinne

Hi Corinne

First of all, I just want to say Welcome to Onederland!  Doesn't it feel great for that number to begin with a one !!!

I've been travelling a lot for work lately & there are a number of things I always pack now.  Keep in mind, some may not be necessary for you if driving but my trips usually require air travel so here goes ...

-couple bottles of water in my suitcase (since they take it away in the airport now, I don't want to be stuck without any when I get to where I am going)
-decaf tea bags as most hotels have those individual pots in the room, I try to drink as much diuretic tea as I can since I always retain water when I fly
-vinegar packets ... they come in handy when you order a salad with no dressing (you can get these from most Wendy's condiment stands in their dining rooms)
-protien bars
-apples travel well in my suitcase as do grape tomatoes and both are easy to snack on in the car, in the room, wherever
-I don't usually bother with bread while I'm away but sometimes, I'll toss some allowable pita's in my suitcase
-I hate eating in restaurants alone anyway so most times, I'll find a Wendy's and order either a chicken caesar - no dressing or croutons or I'll have two side salads, I just don't eat the carrots on them and take it back to my room
-if I want something hot, I'll order a grilled chicken combo, no bun, extra onion tomato & lettuce with a side salad and a Dasani or Light Lemonade - they put the grilled chicken into a small salad platter, just make sure you ask for a knife as they don't seem to think of that

Now having said all that - as hard as I try, I am always 'up' when I get back from a trip however it comes back off by the next weigh in so I'm pretty sure it's just water retention.  I work for Wendy's so I am very familiar with what's in stuff, how we cook our chicken, etc. which is why I stick with Wendy's when I have to eat out.  If I am going to be on a plane at meal time (even though they don't serve meals anymore) I always take something with me as those cookies and pretzels that they hand out are just too tempting when they are being handed out, you are hungry and there is nothing else.

I also have occasions where I have to go to restaurants but I find that there is usually something on most menus that I can have or they are pretty good with my special requests.  I'm off again in the morning for 3 days to the US so I'll let you know how it goes when I get back.

PS - we do have several Wendy's in some pretty remote towns in northern Alberta & BC

Thank you Michelle!

Those are great ideas and I will definately try to find a Wendy's.

Yes you are so correct about the oneaderland.  Took me a moment to figure out what you meant!  Sheesh eh!  He he he...

Have a great trip tomorrow!

I may be too late for your trip, but hopefully you have internet access and are checking this out.

I have had to travel to Australia on business for 2 week periods twice since I started the diet.  Both times I lost 10 pounds while I was there.  Here's what I did.

I found the supermarket as soon as I got to town and stocked up on fresh veggies, fruit, melba toast, and tuna.  I also found some fat free cheese and meat slices for a little variety.  If I ate out, I made sure no sauces and what types of veggies were being served and left "a lot" on my plate uneaten (and unfortunately no doggy bag for the beef since I only got it twice while I was there anyway).  I've been on the program since September, but only just tried the protein bars, so I didn't take any but it's a good idea for some variety and a sure thing to eat on the airplane.  I'll be sure to buy some before the next trip.

The other I thing I did that was key - I took my B6 and B12 supplements with me as well as the potassium and vitamin supplements.  I've been on them for several years for various reasons (including assisting iron absorbtion as I am anemic) but don't take them while I'm on the shots.  However, as I didn't have access to the clinic, the shots were what I would miss.  Check with your family doctor of clinic doctor, but what I was taking was 1000mg of B12 and 250mg of B6 every day while I was away.  Worked like a charm for me.

Thank you not to late!  I leave tomorrow morning so I have been faithful on the program for the weekend.  I went to the drug store and bought some b 12 & 6 so hopefully that will be what helps me too!  I appreciate this insight and as soon as possible will be going to find a supermarket to pick up some of the stuff I will need!

Hi Michelle, I read this post yesterday and I was in a position that I left my supper at work while going to rehearsal.  I remembered your post read that day and looked for a Wendy's.  I got the grilled chicken combo with no bun and a side salad. I forgot to say no sauce. Fortunately the sauce was on top of the lettuce. Since they had Broccoli and Cheese on a Potato, I asked if I could get a side of Broccoli and they obliged. The broccoli was mostly cut up stock, but some florets. All in all it was good. I got the side salad instead of fries and a bottle of water for my drink. Since I was starving at that time I wolfed down the chicken pattie but then realized that that the pattie is really big. Is the chicken pattie to much protien? Also I asked for vinegar packets, but the drive thru person looked at me as though I had 3 heads.  They gave me the Italian Vinegrette. I contemplated using the dressing, but opted for the salt and pepper on the salad.  I just re-read your post and you said most Wendy's have the vinger packets. Do you know if that is a regional thing or a store by store basis?

Hi Tony - I'm glad you found my post helpful when you were in a pinch.  Hopefully, I can answer all your questions:
Grilled chicken for sandwich is a 4 oz. raw weight so yes, you probably should leave a bite or two - the good news is that to cook it, we scrape the grill (diff part of grill from where burgers cooked) and use no-stick spray not oil to cook it

Grilled chicken for salads is 2.75 oz. cooked weight, baked and frozen before it gets to us
both grilled chickens are breast meat

Broccoli for potatoes comes in frozen & chopped so what you got is the norm (I applaud your creativeness on this one - even though I'm in the stores regularily, I never even thought of it)

Vinegar packets - my apologies ... should have put a US disclaimer on that one. :)  Apparently, vinegar on fries is not something the American population eats so US stores do not carry vinegar.  Because I know this, when I travel, I always carry a bunch of packets with me (scooped from a Cdn. store of course).  As Canadians, if we ask for vinegar for our fries at any restaurant in the US, we get that two heads look too!

On the salad dressing ... you did the right thing.  I can honestly say that there is not one of our salad dressings that I would eat on this diet.  We have a fat free french however it has a huge amount of sugar so it would kick you out of ketosis for sure.

Michelle,

the chicken that is used in the salads is it safe to eat as well or should we either bring our own or order a chicken grill as well and use that chicken? Do you know if it is cooked with oil since it is not cooked in store?

Thanks

Thanks Michelle for answering my questions. About the vinegar on fries. I remember when I was a kid and I went to Canada and got fries and the people I was with sprinkled the white vinegar on my fries. I was dumbfounded, but then I tasted it and liked it a lot.

Thanks
Tony

Chicken in the salads is baked so from an oil standpoint it is safe.  It does have sodium & a little bit of sugar in the seasoning (no different than the M&M frozen stuff you buy) but because of this, I just consider the 2.75 cooked oz. as my entire protien portion.  It's never ideal to eat out however in a pinch ... I always figure the devil I know is better than the one I don't so I chose Wendy's.
